Purchasing With Your Vehicle
Project
We introduced the e-commerce project as part of the innovation product team. With this vehicle subscription, people can purchase items such as coffee and pay for parking from inside their vehicle.
Challenges
Driver distraction was a very important aspect of our design. We wanted to make this as safe and easily usable as possible. To do this, we introduced voice design into the flow.

PROCESS
We began with market research and competitive analysis. I collected over 600 app screenshots from our team for auditing. We demoed and audited similar quick ordering processes. I read through driver distraction guidelines and requirements.
After preliminary research, I ran remote user interviews asking questions to find pain points around people's commute. We learned that many people are in a rush. We also learned that when a majority of people purchase food on the run, their biggest pain point is lines and waiting. Whatever purchasing assistance we brought to the table had to be fast and convenient.
From the user interviews we created personas. Personas were a key part of the process because it helped our team of product owners and developers get out of their opinions and into the mindset of others.
Once personas were made, we created journey maps and user task flows. The journey maps uncovered a lot of functionality needs that we wouldn't have otherwise uncovered. The task flows assisted in fast user story creation between product, BA, and UX teams. It also helped me rapidly create wireframes.
With the wireframes, I began usability testing. Some testing was remote and the rest was in person with a tablet in the vehicle with an Alexa prototype. As we continue iterating wireframing and designing, I plan to continue usability testing.
2020 CES Update!
At the 2020 CES event, SiriusXM unveiled this product and its partnership with VISA. See it in action in the video.
βThe only real downside right now is a lack of partners. SiriusXM is working to get restaurant chains, gas stations and toll roads to use this system. After that, it's no leap to see this product rapidly proliferate throughout the automotive industry. The experience it should provide will be almost seamless.β
